The Last Supper: Leonardo da Vinci's Masterpiece

An Overview

Il Cenacolo (The Last Supper in English) is a renowned mural painting by the Italian High Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. Created between 1495 and 1498, it depicts the final meal of Jesus with his disciples and is widely considered one of the most celebrated artworks in the world.

Historical Context

In 1495, Leonardo da Vinci embarked on what would become one of history's most influential paintings. Commissioned by the Duke of Milan, Ludovico Sforza, The Last Supper was intended to grace the refectory (dining hall) of the Santa Maria delle Grazie, a Dominican convent in Milan.

Artistic Technique

Da Vinci employed a groundbreaking technique called sfumato (hazy) in The Last Supper. By blending colors and tones subtly, he created a sense of depth and realism that was revolutionary for its time. The composition is also notable for its triangular arrangement, with Jesus at the apex, emphasizing his central role in the narrative.
